How it came about

I’ve dabbled a bit with off road, had a proper trials bike for mucking about in the woods. Also tried a neat little Yam XT200 for going off roading with the local bike club. Both lots of fun. Green laning caught my attention with an idea to combine travel further afield with off road tracks. But what to ride. Theres a huge choice of course, more so now than ever before. But I like older bikes, especially BMW and Moto Guzzi. I’d owned a Quota, but way too massive. My F650 was better, but too snatchy.

I decided to cobble together a bitsa beemer with nobbly tyres and as little weight as possible.

The initial result was an ugly, heavy road biased scrambler. With an ATE front end and cast wheels it was ungainly off road.

I found  a 21 inch front wheel and some RT brembo forks.

Then a GS styled ST tank turned up. A police single seat came up next.

Next I ditched the headlight, mudguards and indicators. Acerbis and UFO plastics went on.

The twin standard exhaust in SS was heavy and too low in deep water. Armours do a siames set of header. With a triumph Daytona end can in carbon fibre cobbled on with reducers, its still quiet and easily clears deep water. Much lighter too.

The wiring was relocated under the tank, with a single twin output coil replacing the heavy oil filled originals.

With a set of hefty nobby tyres by metzeler it was transformed into a decent off road proposition.

I finally got a spoked rear wheel to match the front to complete the build.

Having done the Strate Florida twice, lots of local byeways and survived the Valleys Lite event, I reckon its a reasonable choice to go travel and off road with.

Its been a fun build, and taught me a lot about BMs

Its now a proper light weight, for a boxer at least enjoyable duel purpose bike.

Morocco here I come!
